It is said that people who believe the myth that humans only use 10% of their brains, only do use that much. However, for the remainder of us, we use the rest of our brains without difficulty. This claim first originated purely from the media. It has appeared everywhere from National Geographic Magazine to TV shows like, The Secret Lives of Men. Stating that men only use ten percent of their brains.
This relates to science because it deals with the human body and the technology able to track exactly what percentage of our brains we use. Scientists have tracked the brain's activity thoroughly enough to laugh at the matter of only using ten percent of our brains. They study each part of our brains and decide what we use it for.
Brain researchers use PET scans and FMRI's to show that people use the majority of the brain throughout the day. Although during certain activities like reading, you may only be using specific portion of your brain. But in the course of the day, or even an hour you are using the rest of your brain for reasons you may not even know about. Neurologist Barry Gordon puts it as, "The brain represents 3% of the body's weight and uses 20% of the body's energy." Also, neurologist John Henley explains, "Even in sleep, areas such as the frontal cortex, which controls things like higher level thinking and self- awareness, or the somatosensory areas, which help people sense their surrounding, are active."
